INTRO: “Beatitudes” for Mothers!

I. HOW MANY TIMES IS “MOTHER” MENTIIONED IN THE BIBLE?
A. It appears 245 times in the KJV.
B. The first reference is in Genesis 2:24.
C. The second use is in Genesis 3:20.

II. WE KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LAW REGARDING THE HONOR OF A MOTHER AND FATHER IN THE HOME.
A. The first commandment with a promise added to it dealt with honor of parents. Exodus 20:12
B. The law was very strict concerning a child’s honor of his mother. Exodus 21:15-17; Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Proverbs 10:20

III. THE BOOK OF PROVERBS IS FILLED WITH ADMONITIONS CONERNING MOTHERS (AND FATHERS).
A. Proverbs 1:8 – “Hear, my son…and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”
B. Proverbs 6:20 repeats the thought and adds to it.
C. Proverbs 10:1 gives a solemn warning of what a foolish son does to his mother.
D. Proverbs 23:22 – “Do not despise your mother when she is old.”
E. Proverbs 29:15 – “A child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.”
F. Proverbs 30:17 – “The eye that scorns his mother.”

IV. MOTHERHOOD WAS SO IMPORTANT TO JESUS.
A. God chose for Jesus to have an earthly mother and a heavenly Father.
B. Jesus repeated the fifth commandment in Matthew 19:19
C. One of his last statements had to do with His mother.

V. THE PICTURE OF MOTHERHOOD WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO PAUL.
A. He taught something special in I Timothy 5:2.
B. Every relationship on earth is a picture of our heavenly relationships.
