People are like sheep

At first reading the title you may say yes, people are like sheep they are baaaaaaaaaad! Ha! Ha! You know in a lot of ways people are like sheep, there are many illustrations we can use from sheep to teach about the way God’s people are to behave. For example:

• Sheep are animals that stay together. God’s people should be close and stay together (John 17:23).
• Sheep tend to wander away, if they do not follow the shepherd. Aren’t we the same? (Hebrews 2:1).
• Sheep are defenseless, for the most part and need the protection of their shepherds. So too, the church needs human leaders who model Jesus and we need Jesus Himself (1 Peter 5:1-2).
• Sheep are very useful animals. Not only in their wool and milk, but also in reproduction - the flocks should increase in number. So should the church spread the gospel and increase (Matthew 28:18-20).

Like sheep we as Christians need to be taught, guided, and helped (Hebrews 12:2).

I am sure there are many other illustrations we can draw from sheep but probably the most important is that we are all spiritually like sheep, but what kind of sheep are you?

• Are you a loyal sheep (John 10:16)? Are you safe and secure in the flock, the church? Then praise God!
• Are you a hearing and following sheep (John 10:27)? We must hear and follow the Great Shepherd if not we need to repent.
• Are you a straying sheep (Luke 15:4-7)? You were in the fold but have left will you come back today?
• Are you a phony sheep (Mathew. 7:15)? Are you genuine and true to the Lord? Or are you just pretending? Are you a wolf in sheep clothing?
• Are you a lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-14)? A sheep that is lost is in danger of the wolves of the world; come back to the Shepherd’s protection today.

By repenting of your sins, confessing your belief in Christ and being baptized for the remission of sins you can be added to the flock of God. Today can you truly say you are one of the Chief Shepherd’s sheep?
